$25 Thrift Store Challenge #1

I am always up for a challenge. So I really wanted to jump into the $25 Challenge craze ASAP. But to really have fun (and flex my math skills), I challenged myself to put together TWO outfits from the thrift store under $25. Although, for total transparency, I did go shopping on Sunday when my local Goodwill clearances a particular tag color (it changes every week) to $.99. And so I was able to find a lot full of goodies on sale for only $.99, taking my total to only $16! Ok, that is an exciting accomplishment, but if you’re getting really excited thinking "Whoa 9 pieces for $16!? That is amazing.", I have a confession. To put together a complete outfit, I had to pull accessories from my own closet to finish each look. But that’s ok. I find it’s important to mix current pieces with your thrift finds to make the look modern but still unique. I also don’t doubt that with enough scouring, one could find these same accessories from the thrift store.

For my first outfit, I wanted to show you how an "old lady" dress at first glance, can turn into a sweet summer dress that you can wear on the weekend for brunch or even to a casual summer wedding. I was first drawn to this dress based on the color, print and beautiful pleating at the front. When I pulled it out, it was 6 sizes too big and looked, frankly, like a mu-mu. But then I thought "there is nothing a belt can’t fix". And it’s true! Just adding this brown braided belt ($.99) instantly adds shape and makes it look like something I can find at a store today. I went the fancier route for the styling of this dress (because wedding season is not over yet!) and paired it with my basic nude sandals and multi-colored straw-like clutch. Even though summer is coming to an end, the hot weather is not. So I will definitely get plenty of use out of this dress for before Fall officially hits. And how cool would it look with a pair of white boots??? I really need to get myself a pair soon!

Ugh! How gorgeous is this print! I’m so glad I didn’t give up on it.

For my second outfit, I lucked out with these American Eagle jeans because I don’t usually find jeans that I like at my local Goodwill. Most jeans are either too skinny (from the jegging craze of the 2000’s) or low-waisted (also from the 2000’s – not a great time for jeans). But these are a fairly current style from AE – the Vintage Hi Rise jean – for only $7. Score! Finding this men’s t-shirt inspired me to put together this beachy-esque outfit -straw hat and bag in tow. I also lucked out with these shoes. One, because I have a hard time finding cute shoes for my size 6 foot. And second, because they complemented the hat so well! It’s like this outfit was meant to be.

I modified these pieces by cutting off the hem of the jeans and rolling up the sleeves of the tee. There’s something cool about a raw hem and a rolled up cuff.
