The Checkerboard Shirt

Do you believe in destiny?  Well there are times when I believe that I’m destined for a certain piece of clothing.  This shirt is the perfect example. I know this may sound silly but finding amazing pieces while thrifting often comes down to chance.  I never really know what I may find when I step into the store so when I find something incredible, I’m just lucky someone else didn’t get there before me!

Chance and luck brought me to this shirt.  Last week I walked into a thrift store near my new apartment looking for homeware. I had no idea that they even sold clothing. Boy was I wrong.  When I walked in my eyes instantly went to a bright red wool coat (surprising?).  Naturally, when I find one great thing I need to keep looking for more!  As I was sifting through the blouses, I tried to grab a shirt but it was partially stuck under the hanger of this shirt.  And that’s when I noticed it – the red squares, the red checkerboard pattern. It’s so amazingly 80’s with a checkerboard pattern I had to have it.  The crazy thing is that I only found it because it was stuck on a different shirt. Yea, I call that destiny.

For this outfit, I wanted the shirt to be the focus so I paired it with these Madewell waxed black jeans and black booties.  I mixed in some gold accessories with my vintage necklace and belt to echo the 80’s feeling of the shirt. I also wanted my bag to blend in so I choose my new black Coach bag that just so happens to have a scarf that perfectly coordinates with the shirt.
